Pellet price increase: worst trend since 2007

Speculation and increased demand the main causes

Speculation and increased demand the main causes

The price of pellets has reached a new negative record after being stable for a good 15 years. The worrying increase is caused by the side effects of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Indeed, as a result of the war, EU countries have had to seek solutions to drastically reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and this has led to an increase in demand for biomass fuels, among other things.

Not only that, among the negative effects of the war, it must be added that the two largest producers of pellets in the world are Ukraine and Russia, which for various reasons have therefore greatly reduced exports to Europe. Finally, as always in these cases, the markets also play their part with speculation that seems out of control at the moment.

For Italy then, which is the world's leading consumer of pellets for domestic use, although it buys 85% of it abroad, pellet prices have risen by €108 over the previous year, according to AIEL. Thus rising from 233 euro to 341 euro: ex-works and net of VAT.

In summary, the Association points out that a consumer currently buys the classic 15-kilo bag at a cost of 5.77 euro, an increase of 1.2 euro compared to 2021. A significant increase considering that the daily requirement is just one 15-kilo sack of pellets.
