Piedmont one step ahead of everyone on energy autonomy and biomass

Piedmont is counting on biomass to bring it closer to energy autonomy, a goal that has never been as topical as it is now. It is asking the government to review the NRP in order to obtain the necessary resources to implement the project.

"Studies show that in five years we could be at least 15% free of gas. It's not an easy path, because of the costs involved, but it's more than realistic." - Piedmont Regional Councillor for the Environment Matteo Marnati told ANSA. He announced his intention, shared with president Alberto Cirio, to write to Minister Cingolani and Prime Minister Draghi.

"The use of woody biomass for energy purposes is a key tool for reducing energy dependence on traditional fossil fuels and mitigating CO2 emissions." - said Marnati, who met with a number of energy company operators to discuss the possibility of promoting a short biomass supply chain in Piedmont.

"We have been presented with some scenarios, based on studies, according to which" – he continued – "about one million people, i.e. a quarter of Piedmont's population, could replace their methane and diesel boilers with biomass boilers through the latest generation of district heating plants.

"We are talking about low-impact plants which, thanks to the new filters, can reduce CO2, fine dust and nitrogen oxides to at least the level of methane emissions, i.e. zero. We could start quickly and have the first power plants in 18 months or two years at the most.".

Piedmont is also aiming for energy autonomy through the development of photovoltaics. "The recently approved Piedmontese Energy Plan, which replaces the last one dating back to 2004, envisages tripling the number of installations by 2030." - concluded Marnati - "This means reducing dependence on gas by 4% a year. These are realistic solutions, but the government has to follow us with the NRP. That is why, together with President Cirio, I will write to Cingolani and Draghi to ask them to consider this project".
